Trump Says US Needs Greenland, In Renewed Push For The Territory
US President Donald Trump has renewed his campaign to acquire Greenland, appointing a special envoy to the territory, who he says will 鈥渓ead the charge.鈥 Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland, a territory that the president says the US needs for national security.聽 鈥淲e need Greenland for national security, not for minerals... If you take a look at Greenland, you look up and down the coast, you have Russian and Chinese ships all over the place,鈥 Trump said.聽 Trump鈥檚 renewed push has been criticized by Denmark and Greenland, which is a self-governing Danish territory. In a joint statement, their prime ministers said that 鈥淕reenland belongs to the Greenlanders,鈥 adding, 鈥淵ou cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.鈥 Landry expressed enthusiasm toward the idea on social media platform X, saying that 鈥渋t鈥檚 an honor to serve鈥 in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US.鈥 Since his return to office in January, Trump has reignited his longstanding interest in the territory, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth. Trump has not ruled out the use of force to achieve control over the island, which has shocked Denmark, a NATO ally that has traditionally held close ties with Washington.聽 Greenland, with around 57,000 residents, has had broad self-governance since 1979, but defense and foreign policy remain Denmark's responsibilities.聽
